Emanating from the royal vision, the Dungsam Cement Corporation Limited started in 1982 as a Dungsam Cement Project office but due to so many challenges and obstructions, particularly the security concerns, it had to remain on hold for more than two decades.
In 2006, the construction works resumed and since then, the project began to take its shape. On September 10, 2009, the project was incorporated under the Companies Act of the Kingdom of Bhutan and in 2014 the commercial operations of the Plant started.
Located in the country’s eastern region of Dungsam Pemagatshel, under Nganglam Dungkhag, the cement plant has an installed capacity to produce 3,000 MT of clinker and 4,130 MT of cement a day making it the largest cement manufacturing industry in the country and one of the largest in the region.
Today, the company produces three types of cement viz. Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC), Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) and Portland Slag Cement (PSC), which are sold in both domestic and export markets.
Of the total production capacity, 40% of the cement is exported to India while 60% is sold in the domestic market of which a major portion is supplied to the various hydro power projects in the country.
DCCL is privileged to be recognized as the sole supplier of cement to all the hydropower projects in the country. The ongoing power projects such as Phuntsangchhu Hydro Power Project I and II and Nikachu Hydro Power Project use our OPC and the same cement was also supplied to the 720 MW capacity Mangduechhu Hydo Power Project, which was commissioned in 2019.
As the company still under the huge debt overburden, whatever revenue the company earns is spent on loan repayment and once the loans are liquidated, DCCL, which has an earning capacity of more than Nu 4 billion annually will become one of the major contributors to the country’s economy in the near future.
